My Moment of Not-Zen

kleenex-on-the-go

Internal monologue, while walking to the subway station this morning-

What was it I needed at CVS?

Cough drops, lip balm, and those little travel Kleenex packages.

Wait, I have a coupon at home on the table- darn.  Should I wait to shop there until I have it?

No, I need those things to make it through today, especially the cough drops.

But its going to make me late, stopping at CVS.  And I don’t know that store- I’ll have to walk around looking for them.  Maybe I should dash in for just one.  But I really need all three.  Maybe skip the lip balm.  I could use toilet paper when my Kleenex runs out.  I hate that.  And my lips feel terrible. I want to get all three things.

But do I really?  Being that much later will put me on a fuller train, and also the security line will be really long once I get there, which will make me even later.

But does it really matter if I’m a little late?  Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t.   I know I don’t like to be late.

I could skip the errand and be a little bit early.  But I would probably find myself with that itchy cough in front of everybody- that would be bad.  I’d have to excuse myself.  I’m not going to disrupt things when a cough drop would take care of it.

I knew I needed to get these, why didn’t I leave ten minutes earlier?

I hate thinking this way-having this kind of debate with myself.  I have two choices.

One is to not care if I’m late.  The other choice would have been to leave enough time to do what you need to do.  Acknowledge reality.

Ah well, next time.

P.S. I ran my errand and even made it on time this morning.  Hmmm.  Could I have skipped this whole conversation with myself? I was glad I took time to find the lip balm!
